Change Your Brain, And Your Life —In Just Minutes A Day
Learn a simple neuroscience-based technique that can help you quickly and easily begin to change habits, develop new skills, become more resilienT, and rewire your brain for less stress -- and more joy --in just 10 minutes a day or less.
Recent discoveries in neuroscience indicate that every 'movement of mind' -- thought, intention, feeling, act of imagination -- leaves a specific 'neural imprint': a change in blood flow, neurochemistry, and/or autonomic system activation. By 'reverse engineering' and designing specific practices and mental exercises targeted to optimize neural imprints, we can systematically build and reinforce the brain circuits that habituate desired feelings and behaviors. In other words, we can literally begin to re-wire our brains to build new habits with precision and specificity -- in as little as 60 seconds!
The power of micro-practices: A micro-practice is a specific way of focusing your attention and imagination that activates targeted brain circuits. For example, when you imagine a future reward, your brain increases dopamine production, which boosts your motivation to act. When you focus on breathing more deeply and slowly, your vagus nerve signals a shift into parasympathetic activation -- into a state of rest and relaxation. Each micro-practice builds, reinforces, and strengthens different neural circuits, allowing for gentle, rapid development of new habits of perception, thought, emotion, and behavior.
30 seconds to 2 minutes at a time: Micro-practices are brief -- most last only for a few seconds. And, the power of micro-practices comes from stacking and repeating them many times during the day. The brain learns best through repeating small patterns of attention or action frequently: 'little and often' primes neuroplasticity, which is our brain's capacity to re-wire itself. So when you, for example, repeat a specific micro-practice or stack every hour during the day, each 'rep' is building or reinforcing a specific neural circuit, re-wiring your brain and building new habits of thought, perception, emotion and behavior.
Calisthenics for your brain: Micro-practices are like calisthenics or, better yet, high-intensity interval training for your brain. Every repetition builds and 'tunes' specific circuitry in your brain, just as every push-up or bicep curl builds greater physical strength and muscular definition. The more you use the micro-practices, the more mentally fit you become, the more easily you develop new skills, the more positive emotion you tend to experience, and the the more you are able to navigate life's challenges with a greater sense of inner calm, clarity and confidence -- no matter what life throws your way.
