When I was 16 I was pretty proud of myself for landing a job at K-Mart. It was an upgrade from the drive-thru duty I’d been on at McDonalds since I was fifteen. I was moving up in the world! But soon after I took that job, I realized I’d made a horrific mistake. I was great at helping customers and working the register, but what I’d failed to notice before accepting the job was that it included asking for price checks over the store intercom system. After doing it once and cringing at the sound of my shaking voice heard through the whole store, I started asking my fellow employees to make my price check requests over the loudspeaker for me. Some of the older ladies took pity and did it for me, but mostly people were annoyed. And as a very independent person, I was annoyed with myself for not being able to do such a simple task. At sixteen I didn’t have it in me yet to feel the fear and do it anyway, so I just quit the job.
Fast forward more that twenty years later, I regularly feel the fear and do it anyway. Even when my voice shakes. Especially when my voice shakes. So when I was recently asked to participate in the Integrative Conversations podcast, a series sponsored by the Academy of Integrative Mental Health, I agreed. We had a good discussion on mental health and how aromatherapy can provide supportive care. I’d love for you to give it a listen if you’re curious about what oils can support mental wellness and how to use them. And, hey, let me know if my voice sounds completely weird, because remember my little hang up from K-Mart? You may have guessed it, but I haven’t listened to the episode yet. As it turns out, I've become brave enough over the years to speak in public, but I still don't want to listen to my recorded voice. Baby steps!
