4 Reasons To Start Your Journaling Practice Today

You’ve probably heard me talk about journaling on social media. Journaling is a lot like meditation in that it’s hugely important for personal growth and a foundation of Project Flourish. So what’s the big deal and how can it help you?

Here are 4 really good reasons to start a journaling practice today:

  • Reveals thinking patterns. Free writing brings focus and clarity to your mind and, over time, reveals thinking patterns. This type of insight is invaluable when as you set out to change negative patterns/ habits like we are doing in Project Flourish. Identifying these negative patterns help heal limiting beliefs that previously prevented you from getting to where you wanted to go.
  • Helps to process overwhelming emotion in a healthy way. Journaling gives you a chance to fully process emotions in relation to current or past situations before acting on them. As you put pen to paper and process your feelings, your next action steps become more apparent. They will be more thought out and mature because you’ve had time to deal with all of your thoughts and feelings surrounding the situation. As a result, you can learn to tame your tongue and not call your sister/ neighbor/ friend a b*tch, like you had originally thought was a great idea. Kidding. Only partially.
  • Heal your relationships. Consider re-writing an event from the perspective of another person whose viewpoint you may be struggling to see or writing an unsent letter to someone you want to forgive but can’t seem to. Your journaling practice can increase empathy and help you to consider the possible emotions of the other person.
  • Improve your sense of well-being. When you incorporate journaling into a regular practice, you are supporting rhythm and routine in your life; creating a time and space to value and explore who you are and what you have to offer the world. These simple acts of self-care will lower your stress levels and improve your sense of well-being.

Put it into action with these easy steps!

  1. First things first, go out and buy yourself a beautiful journal. As a journal junkie and lover of all things pretty, I know that there are lots of stores that carry affordable (and gorgeous!) options. If you're itching to get started right away, look at your local Target or TJ Maxx. I bet you’ll find something that meets your needs. But if you can be patient and wait for one to arrive in the mail- order my absolute favorite: The Desire Map Journal. It's all kinds of awesome.
  2. Set a time and stick to it. Maybe you want to write every single morning. Maybe you can find time only on Tuesday evenings. Whatever you decide on, get it on your calendar, set reminders, do whatever you need to do to get in the habit of sticking to it.
  3. Decided how you will develop your practice. Will you sit down for 20 minutes? Will you write four pages? Whatever you decide on, just commit.

What will you write about?
